UPPER TENNESSEE RIVERBOAT MUSEUM
300 Neyland Drive, Knoxville TN
Tennessee Riverboat Company, NavCal Marine Services, LLC, and Mr. Bob Davis (noted riverboat historian) are pleases to announce the formation of the UPPER TENNESSEE RIVERBOAT MUSEUM.
We will be starting up soon with a set of exhibits and a DVD running on a wide screen TV in the Tennessee Riverboat Company office located at 300 Neyland Drive, Knoxville, TN. Our normal hours of operation will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends 10:00 to 2:00. Check the web site for our official opening date.
We would like to solicit your help in locating information or artifacts that would be useful to the Museum. Before the days of TVA and the Corps of Engineers the river was a VERY different place. We want to document and preserve Tennessee River operations from the days of the early keel boats and rafts up to the present time. Your assistance in this effort will be greatly appreciated. We are also looking those who would like to become members of the Museum especially during its inaugural year.
Today it is extremely difficult to comprehend what the early steamboats accomplished without electric lights, diesel engines, locks and dams and modern communications. Just imagine yourself in the drawing below, peering out between the stacks, constantly watching for snags and shallow water that could destroy your wooden boat in an instant and this is during daylight. On a dark night with no moon it was even more difficult.
The OBJECTS of the Museum (from our bylaws) are:
To locate, preserve and protect all records, accounts and artifacts of steamboats and riverboats that operated or are operating on the Upper Tennessee River. The Upper Tennessee shall be defined at the Tennessee River and its tributaries above Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
To insure to the fullest extent possible the existence of this museum and the records, accounts and artifacts that it may from time to time acquire.
To assist others in research and exchange of information pertaining to said vessels.
To promote and facilitate dissemination of knowledge of the importance of said vessels to the area, its history, culture and peoples.
